Abstract
This qualitative research study aimed to explore the existing attitudes of adolescents in relation to premarital sex and teenage pregnancy. Data were collected from 6 focus groups with 36 teenagers aged 15-18 years old in 3 villages of Udon Thani province, Thailand. Each focus group included 5-7 participants and lasted for approximately 70 to 90 minutes. Focus groups were conducted in single sex groups. This was enabling them to feel less reluctant to state their perspectives on sensitive issues. The vignettes were used, aimed to explore attitudes of teenagers toward sexual risks, contraception, negative outcomes resulting from unprotected intercourse and how to resolve the problems of unintended pregnancy. These Scenarios allowed the participants protection from self disclosure in that they were able disclose their own opinions by considering issues in their lives of others without having to disclose personal details. The researchers established key themes on the basis of thematic analysis methods using a combination of methods, from Miles & Huberman (1994); Braun & Clarks (2006) A%0 Creswell & Plano Clark (2007) to analyse qualitative data in 5 steps: preparing and exploring the data for analysis; coding; themes and categories; data display; and representing the data analysis. Four themes were identified from the data: the social judgement of girls; boys have nothing to lose; considering risks and parents as problem solvers. All themes relate to continuing existence of double standards concerning the social norm for premarital sex as applied to young women on one side and young men on the other. Teenagers often embark on sexual relationships without considering the use of contraceptives and limitation of parental communication about sex with their teenage children are also reported. Therefore, programmes, which address working together by including parents, teachers and health professionals, are needed to ensure that teenagers are furnished with the knowledge and skills to prevent and deal with unwanted pregnancy. The promotion of open, honest communication between parents and teens is important to overcome difficulties of social judgements and align thinking between old and new social values. It is necessary to develop and clear sex education in the Thai school curriculum, provided by teachers or health personnel who have undergone specific training themselves. Teenagers should have opportunities to access reproductive health care services and counseling.
