Steps:

  1. Open the image to be printed with with GIMP
  2. Click the "Image" toolbar.

  1. Click "Scale Image..."

  1. Click the "link" between Width and Height, this breaks the aspect link.
  2. Change the "pixels" drop down to "inches"
  3. Change the Width/Height to the appropriate paper size. Ie, Width "8.5" Height "11"
  4. Click "Scale", the image may change size in the GIMP viewer.

  1. Click File "Save as..."
  2. Change the "Save in Folder.." and the file name to something other than the original file.
  3. Click "Save"
  4. Dialog may appear regarding "Image Quality", change this to 100.
  5. Click "Ok", the image should be saved.
  6. Close/Exit GIMP
  7. Open the image using KVIEW or GWenview. (right click, open with kview, etc)
  8. Click File then Print. The print dialog appears.
  9. Select the printer to be used to print.
  10. Click the "Properties" button.
  11. On the General Tab, verify, Page Size and Orientation.
  12. On the Margins Tab, verify, "Use custom margins" is checked. All margins set to 0.000.
  13. On the Driver Settings Tab, verify, Page Size, and Resolution, Ink Type, Media Type. The latter option MUST be something like "1200 dpi, Photo, Full Bleed, Black + Color Cartr., Photo Paper"
  14. Click Ok
  15. Click the Image Settings Tab
  16. Make sure "Fit image to page size" and "Center image on page" are checked.
  17. Click Print.

Note: Make sure to save the filename is .ps (or postscript)!

  1. Change the "Save in Folder.." and the file name to something other than the original file.
  2. Click "Save"
  3. The "Save as Postscript" dialog will appear, change the "Unit" to Inches, and verify the demensions match for the paper size you are printing to.
  4. Click "Ok", the image should be saved.
  5. Close/Exit GIMP
  6. Open a terminal window.
  7. Goto the directory where you saved the image. Example:
cd ~/Desktop
  1. Enter this command:
lpr -Pprinter_name filename.ps

Fullbleed Troubleshooting

  1. Make sure the image is scaled to the same size as the paper.
  2. Make sure the printer is set to fullbleed mode. This is found on the printer properties dialog or in the CUPS printer administration page.
  3. Make sure your printer is set to use the correct size of paper that you are trying to print on.
  4. Make sure the printer is set to the correct region and language.
  5. Make sure the print orientation is set correctly.

Special Note regarding orientation: If the page orentiation is portrait, and you want to print a fullbleed 3x5 photo, make sure the photo is scaled to 3" width, by 5" height. If you wish to print the image in the landscape orentiation make sure to scale the image to the correct size and orentiation.

Printing from The GIMP

NOTE: HP recommends that you use GIMPPrint/GuttenPrint v5.0 or greater.

Steps:

  1. Select "Print..." in GIMP.
  2. Click "Setup Printer..."
  3. For the Printer Make:, choose "Adobe"
  4. For the Printer Model, choose "PostScript Level 2"
  5. Make sure that "Standard Command" is selected.
  6. For "Printer Queue", choose your CUPS installed printer/queue.
  7. Click "OK"
  8. Click "Print" on the print dialog.
