It is extremely important to prepare midwives: a) to work with women and their families during pregnancy, labor, and the postpartum period, b) to conduct births on the midwives own responsibility and c) to provide care for the infant during neonatal period. Srimahasarakham Nursing College is the nursing education institute in Thailand sharing the vision of contributing to the global community through international midwifery education and training to increase the number of qualified midwives in Thailand and several countries globally. This enables the exchange of theoretical and practical improvements in midwifery in culturally diverse and unique populations at regional, national, and global levels between Thai midwives and others around the world. Purpose: Srimahasarakham Nursing College working in partnership with Praboromarajchanok Institute for Health Workforce Development and Boromarajonani College of Nursing Network proposes to build international short course training in midwifery that provides the trainee philosophical and theoretical perspectives and learning opportunities to practice midwifery in urban and rural areas in Thailand. The trainees will advance their knowledge, skills, and attitudes in midwifery practice according to the role and scope of the midwife both locally and internationally from the training program. The trainee will have abilities and skills to comprehensively and accurately assess, plan, implement, and evaluate midwifery care for women in normal, at risk, and complicated status during pregnancy, labor and birth, postpartal and neonatal period. This training program focuses on safe and effective midwifery practice in accordance with professional and legal principles, nursing theories, research evidence, cultural issues, and appropriate technology and innovation among multicultural populations. The optimal goal of this training program is that the trainees will be able to apply knowledge and practical experience for the improvement of quality of midwifery care in their home country. An overview of the midwifes role in accordance with professional, legal and ethical responsibilities will be addressed. Special emphasis will be placed on foundation knowledge and practical applications of women-centered care, evidence-based practice, community-based practice, and cultural competence for safe and effective midwifery care. Cultural sensitivity besides midwifery practice in oriental and western cultures will be emphasized. Through this course the trainee will also develop an understanding of health care system, health care policy, and national midwifery care in Thailand. MW002: Midwifery I (6 credits) The course provides an introduction to the anatomy and physiology in women during pregnancy, labor and birth, and postpartum. Emphasis is on understanding of normal prenatal, intrapartal, postpartal and neonatal care. This course also includes discussions and assignments designed to integrate and apply nursing theories, nursing processes and best available evidence into normal prenatal, intrapartal, postpartal and neonatal care for improving midwifery practice in clinical settings. Midwifery practice in homes, primary health care settings and communities will be addressed. Topics related to traditional and alternative medicine and appropriate technology and innovation, and local wisdoms in midwifery practice will be covered. The trainee will be introduced to a variety of skills required for midwifery care (e.g., prenatal examinations, conducting births) through onsite observations, demonstration and return demonstration. MW003: Midwifery II (4.5 credits) This course addresses concepts and principles of midwifery care for high risk mothers and newborns during pregnancy, labor and birth, and postpartum. A variety of common risks and complications the midwife may encounter in clinical practice (e.g, gestational diabetes, hypertensive disorders) will be covered. Emphasis is on understanding of physical, psychological, spiritual and cultural needs of childbearing women at high risk. This course also focuses on integration and application of nursing theories, nursing processes, and evidence-based clinical practice into midwifery care among high risk mothers and newborns. Maternal and fetal health assessment and evidence-based management of common complications of pregnancy and labor will be explored. MW 004 Midwifery Practicum I (3 credits) This course focuses on midwifery practice and skills with women and their families in the home, primary health care settings, and communities based on the provision of midwifery care in community-based setting. Field study in midwifery care for excellence in majority and minority groups in Thailand will address the determinants of maternal-newborn health and the impact of midwifery practice in public health system.
